ZUMAK
I am forty years old. I have overcome many challenges to be able to take pride in my sexual identity and my roots. I have overcome religious imposition, racism, a lack of opportunities; the double discrimination of being both queer and indigenous.
Each day I confront the contradictions between my life in the city and my community. I’ve learnt to view the political resistance of my people and the human rights struggle of the LGBTQ+ community as two sides of the same coin; two voices demanding the same freedoms and dignity. In the city I find peace in introspection and solitude, in the community I find comfort in my family and our roots.
